Austin’s next transit frontier? Think, the Jetsons

A personal rapid transit system uses a fleet of small, car-sized pods to transport people from point to point nonstop and on-demand.

The cars look like something out of the Jetsons (minus the flying part).

Rapid personal transit, or RPT for short, is among the transit proposals being explored by the private sector in Austin, as our sister paper Austin Business Journal reported last week.

The idea, being spearheaded by a former astronaut and Austin CEO Richard Garriot, calls for a fleet of small, automated car-size vehicles to move passengers nonstop and on-demand from one point to another.
